In October 2024, Comet C/2023 A3, also known as Tsuchinshan-ATLAS, was visible in the sky over Arizona shortly after sunset. I spent a couple hours with my camera set to take photos every 10 seconds so that I could make a timelapse ofthe Milky Way rising and the comet setting. This photo is one of those hundreds of photos I took I was fortunate that a vehicle driving over the bridge lit up the hillside during the photo.

This bridge is the one that crosses theSalt River on highway 288 as it goes up towards Young, Arizona. In 1919, thebridge design was finalized and this single lane bridge began carrying traffic by the end of 1920. The Salt River Bridge is the earliest documented bridge built by the Bureau of Public Roads in Arizona, making it one of the first federal infrastructure projects in the state. ADOT’s historic inventory description says in addition, the Salt River Bridge has a Parker truss design, one of four in the state.

Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAScomes from the Oort Cloud, a region filled with frozen debris on the edge of our solar system, and it only makes an appearance once every 80,000 years! This was a very special event and I am thrilled to have captured it! The comet was first spotted by Tsuchinshan Observatory on January 9, 2023, and later confirmed by the ATLAS telescope on February 22, 2023. The comet made its closest approach to Earth on October 12, 2024, at a distance of0.47 AU.
